Ab Workouts And Exercises For Women

The best ab workouts for the female body need to accomplish three things:

  • Tighten your abdominal wall to reduce “lordosis”
  • Decrease visceral fat
  • Target your stabilizers and movers

Lordosis is a condition where a tight lower back and lax abdominal muscles curve your lower spine inwards while simultaneously pushing your stomach outwards. This is one of the reasons why you see relatively thin women with protruding bellies.

Unfortunately, visceral fat can make lordosis worse. Because this type of fat is NOT under your skin, it’s inside your stomach surrounding your organs. And yes, it can also make your stomach stick out even if you are thin.

Now the truth of the matter is that doing a bunch of ab exercises for females will not reduce your visceral fat significantly. You have to do total body exercises (more caloric burn) and reduce dietary sugar to get rid of it completely. But I wanted to mention it anyways.

So what are stabilizers and movers?

Stabilizers are muscles deep in your core that keep your lower back and all its supporting structures toned and tight. And if you have a desk job like 99% of women you probably have weak stabilizers.

Why is this an issue?

Because if you simply start doing a bunch of movement exercises (i.e., crunches) and you have lower back issues and weak stabilizers you will enter a world of pain.

Sadly, most women don’t understand the difference between stabilizers and movers and assume that doing crunches will make their lower back healthier – but it makes it worse!

So the best strategy here is to combine both. Keep your stabilizers (and lower back) healthy while simultaneously working the visible movement muscles (i.e., your abs).

The bottom line is that it doesn’t really make sense to do a bunch of ab workouts designed for women if it’s going to destroy your lower back. So always stop what you are doing if you feel any pain whatsoever in your lower back.

If you are doing ab exercises made for women and you start to feel pain in your back it means that your ab muscles are no longer engaged, your lower back muscles are taking over.

So stop the exercise and do an easier version so that your abs become engaged again.

If you simply “work through it” you will damage your lower back. More pain equals less gain here.

Now there are many different ways to do these ab exercises in your workout.

  • You can do them in circuits
  • You can do them in isolation

To do them in circuits, do one ab exercise after another without any rest in between. If you are more advanced, I recommend doing them all in one giant circuit and only rest for 30s once completed.

If you are a beginner or have lower back issues, you should do these abdominal exercises for women in isolation. This way, you will be able to perfect the movement and asses any potential back issues more effectively.

Just remember this important rule: never do ab exercises before more complex and challenging exercises like squats, for example.

It’s critical that your abdominal muscles and core muscles are as “fresh” as possible before doing challenging weight lifting movements.

The last thing you need is an unstable core (and body) before doing a challenging weight lifting exercise.

So if you are going to do these stomach exercises during your regular workout, position them towards the end.

But What Are The BEST Ab Workouts?

Well, there isn’t one single best ab workout for women. In fact, the best ab workouts are ones that you assemble based upon your particular physiology.

You have to experiment here keeping the above principles in mind until you find what works best for you.

It’s not possible to create a cookie-cutter ab workout that will create superb results in all women all the time.

So put yourself to the test, do some trial and error and figure out what stomach exercises for women give you the best burn with minimal back pain.
